36 construction bids were awarded last week on the new Bemidji Regional Event Center by Kraus Anderson who is the General Contractor of the entire project. The good news is that the total of the bids came in “MILLIONS” of dollars under budget! Like the old saying in the stock market…buy low and sell high, it pays to be building in a tough economy. Not only is competition keen giving our city the biggest bang for the buck, but the sheer number of jobs and activity in town the next 2 years will hopefully pull us through this downturn.
Some “locals” have been questioning that several of the bids are going to “out of town” companies. People have to consider the factors that go into the process. In some cases, there are NO LOCAL COMPANIES that can handle the work being asked to do. In many cases, the local companies were NOT the lowest bidder, and this being a public government project involving both city and state money, proper bidding procedures must be followed. In all cases though, many local labors will be hired on and local SUBCONTRACTORS will be brought on board. Out of town companies will bring management to stay in our hotels, and eat in our restaurants, while construction is being done. The trickle down will be enormous as estimates are up to 200 construction workers for almost 2 years. This truly is our own SHOVEL READY STIMULUS PROJECT.
Here are some of the winning bids and companies:

Stories that have been shared already by winning local bidders is that in some cases this one project will keep their entire staff and company busy for the next 12 to 18 months . It is their hope this project will get them through the current tough times and they hope the economy will be on the road to recovery when completed. I am sure that sentiment is shared by all of us.
