We all know that Minnesota and the Dakotas are in the FAST LANE when it comes to social and fashion trends. Being of Scandinavian, German and Norwegian decent, I am sure you are in touch with your European ancestors and what is new and wild. But for the few that maybe are not up to speed, I bring to you the hottest, cutting edge TRENDS for 3rd quarter 2009. My source is the “bible of trends”….www.trendhunter.com
We start off with what everyone in Northern Minnesota needs this winter…SEE THROUGH JEANS!! (see pic above). For only $242 you can be the first on your block with sheer front jeans (sorry..from the hips down only). It is called the “Sophie Skinny Jean” and gives the viewer a “peek a boo” look at skin through the pant leg. This might have a chance around here if they came in camouflage or blaze orange. I don’t think Gander Mountain is going to be carrying this one.
A Cougar is more than an animal that is spotted on occasion around Park Rapids. Cougars are older women who have a lure for younger men and will do most anything to get their “prey”. From TV shows to movies to books and magazines, Cougars are a real trend. Leopard print in fashion is hot, from leopard print tennis shoes to dresses and capes. (now this might sell at Gander Mountain!). There is even a “Cougar Barbie” doll available. Not to mention the new ABC Sept 23rd premier of the show “COUGARTOWN” featuring Courtney Fox. There was just a National Singles Cougars Convention held and they crowned a MISS COUGAR for 2009. (maybe she can come to the Women’s Expo next year in Bemidji??)
And now about men…a recent competition has spurred a “MAN’S ONLY RV”. Called the MAN CAVE, this motor home includes built in liquor dispensers, wall darts, a plasma television, a poker table, an outdoor theater screen for watching tv outside, and a sundeck complete with an inflatable leopard clad blow up doll to put in the passenger seat as a show off ride along companion. See, I told you leopard prints were showing up everywhere…even in inflatable dolls.
Album Art Purses are another trend on the upward side of the bubble. The Rolling Stones Purse is one of the hottest, with an actual vinyl album on the outside and the interior lining made of the album cover. Minnesota will be waiting for the Weird Al Yankavic album purse to hit the market.
We couldn’t have an article without covering the GREEN/ECO FRIENDLY movement. How about an eco-friendly, self-cleaning swimming pool? About 1/3rd of the water area is for swimming, with the rest consisting of plant regeneration zones that serve to oxygenate and clean the water. Biotop Swimming Pools (also known as swimming ponds) is an Austrian company that have been designing the concept since 1986. Look for one in a neighborhood soon!
Last but not least…HIGH TOP TENNIS SHOES are making a return to the fashion scene. Lacoste (the alligator shirt people) are using distressed leather to make them look old even though they’re new (like the jean scene). Then they are accenting the distressed leather with funky color trims like fuchsia and teal. The icing on the cake is 3 different colored shoe strings that accent the trim colors. This looks a little “fast” for me…I am still waiting for someone to start marketing PF FLYERS again.
Bemidjimike will be on vacation and will return to the bloggersphere around September 10th for my 224th BLOG. Enjoy the holiday.
