I Will Take Two Dasherboards and a Serratore Spaghetti Dinner

Bemidji State University Athletics have released a tentative advertising package for purchasing advertising at hockey games being held at the new regional event center. (As a sidenote…some requests were made not to call the facility the acronym BREC standing of course for Bemidji Regional Event Center for fear of the acronym “sticking with” the building even after naming rights were granted). I thought it was interesting the amount of revenue that can be generated from the new facility and pass the list on to the public.

Dasher Boards: $2000 for one dasher: $3000 for two dashers (visible from both sides of arena) plus the cost of artwork. Definitely one of the most visible advertising opportunities especially for tv cameras and newspaper photography.

In – Ice Logos: Your logo embedded in the playing surface and ensures the television viewers along with the in house crowd of a constant reminder of your business. $4000 plus artwork.

Zamboni: The Zamboni is a hockey icon and even though people take off between periods any hockey officionado would tell you its part of the game to watch the machine make a pass or two. Price is listed as : TBD

Weekly Suite Rental: Didn’t get in on buying a suite but still would like to wine and dine during a WCHA game. Here’s your chance. Price: $1250 for up to 16 people includes a $500 food credit.

Intermission Promotion: The tossing of numbered hockey pucks purchased by fans to win prizes between the 2nd and 3rd period is a Bemidji tradition…known as Chuck-A-Puck. Hockey Hot Shots is the basic shoot the puck through a hole in a board in front of the net to win a prize. Price: $2000 for one intermission at every game throughout the season plus giveaway prize items for winners.

Time – Out promotion: Dunn Bros. coffee has done a nice job this year with cheerleaders bringing coffee out during a time out. And of course there is the possibility of the use of TRIVIA. With probably more tv time outs during WCHA games they’ll be plenty of opportunities. Price: $1000 for one timeout at every game throughout the season plus giveaway prize items for winners.

Serratore Spaghetti Dinner: Coach Tom Serratore introduces his players and gives a season preview at this annual dinner. Sponsors are recognized in print / radio ads and during the event. (maybe they’d have a bigger take making this Meatballs and Gravy or Lutefisk?) Price: $500

Game Weekend Sponsorship: The “granddaddy of all sponsorships” includes tickets and/or suite, mentions in the newspaper and radio ads, PA announcements, booth space in lobby and opportunity to give away promotional items. Price $2000

  1. Mike, I know a while back you posted several ideas for the name of the building. Have you heard what names might be on the short list at this time? OR is it still early yet. I didn’t get an answer on their facebook page yet(the GM set up a facebook page to post updates and answer questions, for those who do not know). Also, do you know the percent breakdown from the advertising revenue in how it is split between the college and the city? Obviously the spaghetti is not. I’m curious because this revenue was not factored in to those studies which projected a possible negative operational cost balance. Naysayers pointed to that study(which was a worse case scenario) as if it was set in stone and you could not get them to understand all the revenue streams not included that would abate that amount.

  2. Good questions Jeff…I will look into it. My guess is a lot of this advertising is going strictly to the University. The City will gain $$$ from more permenant signage in the facility and naming rights and exclusivity of some vending (beer, pop, etc).

  3. Granted, I am not originally from the area, but am I the only one who thinks these prices are very low for advertising at a DI hockey arena?
